Railway in Wartime Weekend

  • 2011-10-15
The clocks in Whitby will be turned back to 1943 this autumn as part of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway's "Railway in Wartime" weekend.   It takes place from 14-16 October and for the first time, a number of wartime trains will be steaming into the seaside resort. Events and entertainment will be taking place in the town centre throughout the Saturday and Sunday thanks to a partnership between the NYMR, the Esk Valley Railway Development Company, Northern Rail, Welcome to Yorkshire, Scarborough Borough Council, the Whitby and District Tourism Association and Whitby Hospitality Association.   Organisers are planning 1940s themed entertainment, wartime recipe demonstrations, a food hall and a vintage flea market, but are also keen to ensure that the grave undertones of the Second World War are remembered in Whitby, which itself suffered at the hands of German bombers, so a number of exhibitions are also being staged.   Visitors to Whitby, will also be able to enjoy rides on Barry Snedden's old Whitby lifeboat which saved dozens of lives during the war, and one of Vernon Smith's "Dames of the Road", the vintage charabanc, Charlotte. Other businesses in the town have also got behind the weekend, with many, particularly in Skinner Street and Flowergate, pledging to put on special wartime window displays or serve a dish featuring wartime flavours.   The idea behind the weekend is to build on the NYMR's "Railway in Wartime" weekend which has reached dizzying heights of success. Last year more than 26,000 extra people visited Pickering alone, with thousands of those dressed in 1940s costume, enjoying food and entertainment authentic to the period.   Organisers of the programme in Whitby are expecting around 5,000 passengers to arrive in the town via steam train, in addition to those who will drive through from Pickering, Levisham, Goathland and Grosmont and those who will come via the picturesque Esk Valley Railway from Middlesbrough and beyond, many of who will be dressed for the occasion in authentic 1940s outfits.   North Yorkshire Moors Railway Senior Marketing Executive Iris Woodhead said: "There is huge potential for residents, businesses and schools to become involved in the war weekend and the 1943 theme, as already happens in Pickering – the popularity of the event there and along the 18-mile stretch of the railway is testament to what can be achieved when the community comes together."   Esk Valley Railway Development Company Development Manager Angela Thirkill said: "The line from Middlesbrough to Whitby attracted around 400,000 passengers in the last year alone and we are looking to encourage people heading to the wartime weekend to leave their cars at home and travel to the coast on the train, taking in some of the most spectacular scenery in Yorkshire."   Welcome to Yorkshire Area Director Janet Deacon said: "We want this event to be a roaring success and become established over time – and the more people from the community who become involved the more likely it is that this aim will be achieved."
