Loving (12a)

  • 2017-03-14 19:30:00

In this Golden Globe nominated film, Richard Loving, a white man, marries Mildred Jeter, a black woman, and they face the judgment of not only a racist society but a racist legal system.

As a mixed race couple living in Virginia in the late 1960s, racial tensions are already high. And so when the two get married, a poisonous cloud of anger and distaste settles over their community.

But interracial marriage has consequences beyond the widespread social disapproval in Virginia, it’s illegal. After the police raid their home in the middle of the night and find them together, Richard and Mildred are both sentenced to a year in prison. And their troubles don’t end there. Forced to fight for the right to be a family in their everyday neighbourhood and in the courts, they face opposition at every turn.Yet they refuse to back down.In their simple, quiet way, Richard and Mildred remain inseparable as they face every challenge, from the abuse thrown at them in the streets to the judgment of the U.S. Supreme Court.Because if there’s one thing the Loving’s won’t let go of, it’s their right to do just that love.

Written and directed by Jeff Nichols (Midnight Special), Loving is a gentle and honest telling of the true story of an American couple who simply wanted to be together. Starring Edgerton (The Great Gatsby) and Negga (Warcraft: The Beginning), it has received critical claim across the globe and was nominated for the Palme d’Or at Cannes.
