Whitby Film Society presents "Alone in Berlin" on Thursday 12th October at Whitby Coliseum Centre.
Brendan Gleeson and Emma Thompson play the Quangels, the dour, unhappy couple who channel their misery at the death of their son into small acts of subversion in second world war Berlin. These take the form of postcard messages, with slogans such as, "Mother! The Fuhrer has murdered my son!" Laboriously written, with gloves on, and then dropped at random points around Berlin, the cards are meant to act as tiny pieces of revolutionary grit, whose sentiments will hopefully clog up the Nazi "war machine." The police are quickly on their track, as almost all the cards are immediately handed in to the authorities. Even so, the Quangels manage to get out over 250 messages before they are arrested.
