The Florida Project
A child’s sense of wonder is at the heart of this story of people living on the impoverished fringes of Florida’s tourist traps in run-down, gaudily painted “projects” with names like Magic Castle and Futureland. In this wonderland, Moonie, Scooty and Jancey run free, exploring all parts of their world. For motel manager Bobby these young tearaways are a headache, but a streak of protective paternalism shines through his world-weary facade, ensuring that he’s always got their backs. Moonee’s mother Halley, a dancer and chancer who makes ends meet any way she can – hawking wholesale perfume to rich resort customers, stealing theme-park entry passes from wide-eyed tourists, remains utterly devoted to her daughter. A superbly sympathetic portrait of marginalised experience –welcome to Moonee’s world!
