Whitby is the very first to celebrate this folkloric character in the UK, with the inaugural event held in 2015.
It’s a fundraiser for local charities and provides a colourful spectacle in the run-up to Christmas. ”Krampus Run” is a direct translation from the German, and it’s a parade rather than a race, with the reading of proclamations, election of the most popular Krampus as the Thing of the North
Krampus and his kompanions will return to the streets of Whitby to administer punishment to the bad as St. Niklaus rewards the good.
A noisy and kolourful kostumed parade with fun activities during the day raising funds for Whitby Wildlife Sanctuary.
Featuring the powerful drums of Die Krampus Krumpettes and figures from local folklore and more.
Good children may be given candy canes, which will ward off attention from any interested Krampus lurking nearby; bad children will need to be vigilant….some of the Krampusse (the plural of Krampus) carry off the naughty ones in their baskets and backpacks.
As dusk falls on the town, the parade takes on a more sinister appearance and the Krampusse melt away into the dark… a finale in the Market Place with the krowning of 'The Thing Of The North'...then onto a very special performance by Fire troupe Mr Fox at Endeavour Wharf
Activities will be throughout the day, come and recreate some cave paintings, wear your shamanic face paint, meet the Krampus and have a photo with the giant Krampus Grusskarten. Children's workshop at Hetty and Betty Cafe and Ballroom.
The parade starts at 3.30pm. Taking place and starting on Church Street, Whitby at 3.30pm finishing in the Market Square.
On to Endeavour Wharf (YO21 1DN) for a very special performance at 6.00pm.
Then at 8.00pm let your hairs down with the Krampus Ball at The Met Lounge and Ballroom, Argyle Rd (YO21 3HU).
Unleash your inner Krampus for an evening of Eine Kleine Nacht Entertainment with an excellent array of acts.
